Mavis Timothy is an important Yanyuwa Elder in the Borroloola Community. She was born at old Malandarri camp across the other side of the McArthur River where people lived in the early days.
Mavis is a Yanuwa Woman who is from the Rrumbarryia Clan who are traditional owners of Borroloola, and her knowledge of the region and all four language groups is extensive.
Mavis has worked many different jobs in her life and was notable as a skilled medical ‘stitcher’ at the Borroloola Clinic for quite some time.Mavis is a late comer to art making, but has a natural creativity and feel for the landscape which comes out strongly in her vibrant paintings, beads and clap sticks. She has a family tradition of painting, and watched other family members become skilled artists in their lifetimes.
